What to send, and what happens if you only have a phone photo
Most memorial shirts start from one photograph, and it is usually an old one, or a picture of a picture, or a screenshot from a phone. That is normal and it is workable. A photograph does not print like a logo does, and there are two honest paths. It can be turned into a drawn or high contrast version that prints cleanly in one or two colors, which looks intentional and holds up in the wash. Or it can stay a full photograph, which means a different printing method and a different price. Send whatever you have, including the small blurry one, and you will be told which path fits before anything is charged.
How fast this can move
Memorial orders usually have a real date attached and it is usually close. The honest answer is that a normal bulk run takes about one to two weeks after the artwork is approved. When there is a service date, say the date in the first sentence of the first call. What can be done depends on what is already on the press that week, and you will get a straight yes or no rather than a maybe. If the date cannot be met here, you will be told that too, in time to try somewhere else.
How many to order
Families almost always order too few. Count immediate family, then count the people who will want one at the service, then add ten. Shirts get asked for at the gathering afterward by people nobody thought to count, and a second run later costs more and takes another week. If the number is uncertain, ordering a few extra in the middle sizes is the cheap insurance. Leftovers from a memorial shirt are not the same problem as leftovers from a fundraiser; families keep them.
Keeping the cost down without making it look cheap
One or two ink colors on a good shirt looks better than four colors on a thin one, and it costs less. Photographs pushed into a one color halftone often look more like a keepsake than a full color reproduction does. If the family is collecting money to cover it, say what the budget is up front and the design can be built to land inside it, rather than quoting something that has to be cut down later.
Shirts for a benefit or a fundraiser in someone's name
A benefit is a different job from a memorial shirt, even though they often happen together. If shirts are being sold to raise money for a family, the price per shirt has to be known before the selling price is set, or the effort raises less than everybody assumed. Selling a shirt for twenty that cost nine raises eleven. Pricing it at fifteen because that felt easier raises six for the same work. Ask for the per shirt cost at the count you expect, then decide what to charge.
What gets asked most often
Whether a photo can go on a shirt: yes, one way or another, and you will be told which way suits the image you have. Whether names can go on the back: yes, and different names on different shirts do not need separate screens. Whether a design can be reused later for an anniversary: yes, and once the artwork exists a repeat run is cheaper and faster than the first one was.

Questions people ask about memorial and in loving memory shirts
Can you put a photograph on a memorial shirt?
Yes. It either gets converted to a clean one or two color version that screen prints well, or it is handled as a full color print, which is a different method and price. Send the photo you have and you will be told which fits.
How fast can memorial shirts be done?
A normal run is about one to two weeks after the artwork is approved. If you have a service date, say it on the first call and you will get a straight answer about whether it can be met.
How many memorial shirts should we order?
More than you think. Count the family, count who will want one at the service, then add about ten. People ask for them afterward, and a second small run costs more per shirt than including them the first time.
Can each shirt have a different name on it?
Yes. The shared design is screen printed and individual names go on afterward in heat applied vinyl, so different backs do not mean different screens.
